"j j j j ~ "c  $%hV  R   Ej ` ,30cj, V ,  c""""""""" News Release Ottawa Firms Share in $38,000 Refund for Safety Training October 7, 2009 Ottawa, ON: This Wednesday individuals representing 19 Ottawa area firms will each receive their share of $38,000 for successfully completing the WSIB Safe Communities Incentive Program, a 7 module program aimed at improving health and safety. The funds represent a five percent rebate of each companys contributions of WSIB premiums paid. The cheque presentation will be made by Matt Wilson, Manager of the Safe Communities Incentive Program, WSIB Prevention Division. Sandra Lawson, Chair of Safe Communities Ottawa commented on the work of the organization saying: Our vision is to make safety the way we work in Ottawa. We want all workplaces in Ottawa to be champions of safety and know where they can access resources and help to prevent needless workplace tragedies. Safe Communities Day is our effort to recognize Ottawa businesses that are making the effort to do that. "The SCIP program was money and time well spent for our business. It opened our eyes to the possible hazards that we hadn't considered and has given us the tools to provide a safer workplace" says Mark Smith, of Smiths Farm Equipment in Jasper, Ontario. Safe Communities Day Mayor Larry OBriens office has officially declared October 7, 2009 as Safe Communities Day in Ottawa. On hand to present the proclamation will be Superintendent Charles Bordeleau of the Ottawa Police Service. Safe Communities Ottawa will also recognize those individuals and organizations who take special efforts to make sure that their workplaces are safe for everyone especially our young workers. We believe that injuries are predictable, preventable and unacceptable. We work to build partnerships and deliver programs to improve the lives of people in our community. In December 2003 Paul Kells, the founder of the national initiative for safe communities handed the "Key to Safety" to Mayor Bob Chiarelli and the City of Ottawa was officially designated as the 46th municipality to be a Safe Community as part of a national strategy. SCO is part of the broader Safe Communities Canada, an organization started in 1997 by Paul Kells in memory of this son, Sean Kells, who was killed in a preventable industrial accident.
