Biographies

Sandra Lawson

Sandra Lawson has been with the Ontario Ministry of Labour (MOL) since January 2000 and has been Director for Eastern Regions Operations Division since September 2007. Sandra has had many opportunities with MOL. She was hired as a District Manager with responsibility for the delivery of the Health and Safety and Employment Standards programs in the Ottawa area. In 2005, the Division restructured to accommodate recruitment of an additional 230 Health and Safety Inspectors. Sandra then became the Manager of the Industrial Health and Safety Program for Eastern Region. She has also acted as Provincial Coordinator for the Industrial Health and Safety Program. Before joining the Ministry of Labour, Sandra coordinated the Ottawa Inter-Ministry Learning Opportunities Program (IMLOP) – an innovative cost recovery staff development program for Ontario Public Servants in Eastern Ontario. Prior to IMLOP, Sandra spent several years as a Rural Community Development practitioner with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and as a Veterinary Pharmaceutical Sales rep with Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Ltd and .  Sandra holds undergraduate degrees in Agricultural Science and in Education and an executive MBA from the University of Ottawa.

Sandra is past chair of the Eastern Ontario Client Service Council for Workplace Health and Safety, past chair of the Vincent Massey School Council and currently chairs the Board of Directors for Safe Communities Ottawa. Alison Beer

Alison is currently working as a Health & Safety Consultant for the Ontario Service Safety Alliance (OSSA) in Ottawa and surrounding area since October 2000. The OSSA is a designated Safe Workplace Association for the service sector in Ontario, delivering health and safety consulting, training, products and services to a wide range of clients, many of whom employ Young Workers.

Alison has a Honours Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Guelph and was previously employed by the Ministry of Health’s Provincial Health Laboratory and by the Ministry of Labour as an Occupational Health & Inspector with the Ministry of Labour in Timmins, ON, from 1979 to 2000.

Alison has been involved in community volunteer work for many years, including the Hamilton Rape Crisis Centre, Timmins Sexual Assault Centre and the Timmins Palliative Care Association. She was also a management representative on the Timmins Regional Labour-Management Health & Safety Committee which received a “Gil Samson” award from the Construction Safety Association of Ontario (CSAO) and personally received a CSAO “Citation of Merit”.  As a Board Member of Safe Communities Ottawa since designation by the Safe Communities Foundation, Alison has been fulfilling the role of Treasurer since 2004. abeer@ossa.com

 


Terry Frederick

Terry Frederick is the Director of Business Development with the United Way Ottawa. He is an accomplished senior management professional with a rich and diverse business background having worked with industry leaders, Bell Canada, Trane, Procter & Gamble and Scotiabank.

Terry is a graduate of Carleton University, Hon BA.  He has completed the Telecommunications Executive Development Program, (Bell/University of Toronto), Leadership and Public Policy program, Aspen Institute for Information Studies, Queenstown Maryland, and Advanced Negotiation & Mediation program, U of Windsor.

Terry sits on the management board for the CCER program in Law Department Carleton University and the Board of Directors for the Provincial PC Riding Association. He teaches in the School of Business at Algonquin College in Ottawa.  Terry, and his wife Cathy, are residents of Ottawa. They are the proud parents of two sons. Terry is an active community volunteer supporting numerous charities and not for profit organizations. tfrederick@sympatico.ca



Christine Roy

Christine Roy has worked for 20 years in Human Resources, in increasingly responsible positions. Her most recent role was as Director of Human Resources for the Ottawa Police Service. Prior to that, she worked in both the private and public sectors with Gandalf Technologies Inc. (a high tech firm) and the former Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton where she gained hands on experience working with senior leaders to align human resource programs with organizational strategic objectives.  Her reputation for designing, developing and implementing human resources programs is based on the results of many significant change efforts she has led or in which she has participated. During her time with the Ottawa Police Service, two of her human resource initiatives were recognized internationally for innovation in policing.

She has demonstrated a capacity to build strong teams and engage a multitude of diverse stakeholders (including Boards, Executives, Managers, employees and unions) in addressing broad organizational issues.  She has been an active volunteer member on a number of human resource related boards and committees including past Chair of the Human Resources Committee of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP).  She currently sits as a Board member of Safe Communities Ottawa (SCO).  Christine lives in Ottawa with her husband and her two children. croy@hrreferencing.com

 


Suzanne Yelle

Suzanne Yelle is Senior Manager within Toronto Hydro’s Generation Group.  Suzanne is presently directing a project to build a new cogeneration plant near Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant in the City of Toronto.  Suzanne is also President and CEO of Compustock Services, a privately owned Electrical Engineering consulting firm.  Suzanne’s experience lies in operations, maintenance and engineering  in the pulp and paper, utility and steel industries where Suzanne held positions of increasing responsibility from superintendant of a Steam Plant, Engineering and Maintenance Manager of a paper mill and until recently, Mill Manager at a specialty pulp mill.  Suzanne’s dedication to safe workplaces evolved over the years from witnessing the effects of incidents on the lives of employees and their families and strongly believes all incidents can be prevented.  

Suzanne holds a Bachelor of Science and Engineering degree from The University of Western Ontario and  is a registered Professional Engineer both in Ontario and in Québec.  She also holds a Class 1 Stationary Engineers License in Quebec as well as a Class 2 License for the rest of Canada.  Suzanne is married to Ben and they are the proud parents of a teenage daughter, Katerina. suzanne.yelle@yahoo.ca




Sue McLaren

Sue McLaren has worked for more than 29 years in the nursing profession, with the majority of her nursing background in Occupational Health. She is a registered nurse, with a Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing and she holds her Canadian Certification in Occupational Health Nursing. Sue is a Certified Health and Safety Consultant having earned this designation through the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering.

Sue has worked in both the private and public sectors and prior to accepting the position as Executive Director with Safe Communities Ottawa, Sue managed the Health/Safety & Lifestyles section of the Ottawa Police Service.  

Sue has designed and implementing health and safety programs and has been recognized provincially and internationally for projects and programs that she led.  She has also been recognized locally for her volunteer work within the community.

She is a member of the Occupational Health Nurses Association and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering.  Sue lives in Cobden with her husband Keith. Their three children, Scott, Katelyn and Mathieu reside in Ottawa.
